Abstract

A simplified approach is presented for determining the pond storage volume required in new subdivisions in order to achieve a desired peak outflow rate. The method utilizes the runoff coefficients in the "rational formula" to arrive at the total volume of runoff. The total discharge volume is determined using a pre-determined peak discharge as the maximum outflow rate. The difference between inflow and outflow volumes yields the storage requirement. To optimize the storage volume, the storage function is maximized. Newton's iteration technique is used to arrive at the optimum parameters. Keywords: simplified approach, storage, volume, pre-development, outflow, optimization, statistical analysis, intensity–duration–frequency curves, runoff control.
