Abstract

Abstract— A simple shear test has been developed to evaluate the bond strength of porcelain fused to metal. Bond strengths to nickel chromium alloys were improved by using a proprietary bonding agent and, with one exception, by an electrodeposited layer of gold. The test was well able to discriminate between the various materials and treatments and the grouping of the results indicated three levels of bonding. The bond strengths appeared to correlate with porcelain type for a given surface condition.
