Abstract

During extrusion the product leaving the die may have a large number of surface defects such as small and large scale fractures and fissures. These defects were investigated experimentally with plastic clay mixtures and a simple geometrical solution is proposed to significantly reduce the problem. The suppression of the surface defects is caused by elongated inserts, which jut out from the die. A qualitative explanation of the effect is presented.
