Abstract

After having discussed the most significant semantic hypotheses for the food system and having rejected them, the paper proposes to consider it as a monoplanar or “appearance” signifying system. Semiotics can operate on these systems by analyzing their morphology and syntax. A general scheme for the food system is proposed, stratified into four levels (ingredients, food, meals, cycles).
