Abstract

The purpose of this conceptual essay is to explore how the theological politics of Stanley Hauerwas can provide an appropriate yet accessible ethical framework for faculty members and administrators at American Christian colleges and universities seeking to maximize the effects of service-learning. An attempt will be made to propose a virtue-based model of service-learning emphasizing the development of hope and patience through an understanding of the Christian church as a contrast society seeking to be a servant community dependent upon God.
