Abstract

This paper proposes a Sigma-Delta Modulator (ΣΔ-M) based Proportional and Integral (PI) controller for bidirectional inductive power transfer (IPT) systems. The controller uses ΣΔ-Ms to convert analog or multi-bit digital signals into single-bit signals and is ideally suited to be implemented in field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Various functional blocks are designed to implement PI actions in single-bit environment. The performance of the proposed controller was compared with a conventional PI controller through simulations in Hardware in Loop (HIL) environment and has been shown to be similar to that of the convectional PI controller. However, the single bit feature of the proposed PI controller consumes significantly less hardware reources such as number of logic elements and simplifies wire routing and computational complexity due to absence of multipliers.
