Abstract

Stress-related diseases have been increasing in recent decades due to industrialization and changes in our life style. Some age-related diseases, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases can be prevented by altering our life styles and consuming nutraceutical rich diets. Saturated fatty acids are considered as one of such compounds which help in preventing diseases and improving health. They are proven to have antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, neuroprotective, anticancer activity etc. They are also exploited in industries as food colouring agents, in cosmetics etc. Current demand cannot be solely met through plant and animal sources. The chemical method of synthesis of this nutraceutical has some disadvantages. Hence, it is better to find alternate microbial source of such compounds. This review focuses on the application of saturated fatty acids and their possible microalgal sources.
