Abstract

A particle simulation code has been developed which is particularly well suited for the investigation of low-frequency plasma phenomena. The code is based on Darwin's formulation of Maxwell's equations in which the transverse displacement current is neglected. There is thus no radiation, but the self-consistent magnetic fields are retained. Use is made of the particle equation of motion to transform the Darwin field equations into a set that is stable under integration in time. An iteration procedure is developed for solving these equations at each time step. This scheme has been coded using finite-size particles and fast Fourier transform methods in both 12 and 21 dimensions. The codes have been checked by comparing the simulation results with the dispersion relations for Alfven, whistler, and magnetosonic waves. Good agreement was obtained.
