R. ; Harwit, M. O. Abstract A search for interstellar molecular hydrogen (H2) by detection of emission lines within the 3-0 vibrational hand has been unsuccessful. No emission lines attributed to H2 were detected in spectra of regions associated with he Orion Nebula, IC 5146, NGC 2264, or IC 1499, or in the close vicinity of Persei. The present experiment does not agree with the suggestion by Werner and Harwit that a weak emission feature of the dark bay associated with the Orion Nebula represents the 0(2) 3-0 line of H2. We cannot at present rule out their alternate interpretation involving a high-velocity cloud emitting the P12 line. The interstellar H2 recently detected hy Carruthers in the ultraviolet spectrum of Persei did not have detectable 3-0 band emission. For each source the present experiment sets an upper limit to the column density of ultraviolet-excited H2 molecules that return to the ground electronic state.
