R. ; Garden, R. P. Abstract Velocity-resolved spectra of the 4.74-micron 1-0 P(8) line of CO and the 4.69-micron 0-0 S(9) line of H2 have been measured at Peak 1 and Peak 2 in the shocked-gas region of the Orion molecular cloud. A map of the CO P(8) line emission in the vicinity of Peak 1 has also been made. The velocity profiles of the CO and H2 lines are similar to one another at each location and roughly resemble those of shorter wavelength lines, such as the 1-0 S(1) line of H2. However, at Peak 1 the S(9) line is noticeably broader than the 1-0 S(1) line. This result is consistent with increased extinction to interior, higher velocity outflowing gas. The map of CO line intensity shows a ridge of peak intensity roughly midway between Peak 1 and BN, and does not closely resemble maps of H2 emission lines. Possible interpretations of this difference are discussed.
