Abstract
The rapid pace of technological change is affecting nearly all aspects of society, including law enforcement and criminal justice. In recognition of this fact, Attorney General Janet Reno has appointed Donald Prosnitz to be the chief science and technology adviser to the Justice Department. Prosnitz reports directly to Reno but will also advise other senior department officials. His direct line to the top broadens his reach within the department and eliminates the appearance of parochial interests when he makes recommendations. According to his job description, Prosnitz is responsible for coordinating science and technology policy among the department's divisions and offices, and with state and local law enforcement departments. He tells C&EN that he intends to be Justice's liaison to the science and engineering community, especially to professional organizations like the American Chemical Society.
