Abstract
This chapter examines the role of women in the fight against terrorism, since they occupy the centre stage on the development ladder of the Nigerian state. The fight against terrorism in Nigeria has long been considered the exclusive duty of men, who are always seen at the forefront, while the vital roles of women are ignored. Women have been central to successes in countering terrorism and violent extremism. In order to fully appreciate women’s roles in responding to terrorism, it is important to spend some time clarifying the concept. Understanding the emergence, development and intensity of terrorism in Nigeria lays the foundation for appreciating women’s contributions towards overcoming its effects in the country. The history of terrorism in Nigeria can be traced to ideological, religious or ethnic chauvinism. The traditional roles ascribed to women in Nigerian societies as wives, mothers and nurturers, therefore, empower them to become the custodians of cultural, social and religious values.
