Abstract

Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) is a special type of green concrete which is highly bendable compared to the brittle nature of normal concrete. ECC is an upcoming material in construction industry. It is a fibre-reinforced flexible concrete without fracturing. The compositions differ from conventional concrete by means of being free from coarse aggregate and higher dosage level of fibres. It is evidenced from the available results that ECC incorporates higher percentages of supplementary cementitious material and hence it is considered as a sustainable construction material. However, it needs more and proper research before regular usage in industry. It is found that the ECC is multiple times more resistance to cracking and suitable for developing energy absorbing structures and flexible concrete roads with less joints. In this background, this paper is intended to critically review the existing research findings on the enhancement in structural performance in addition to the bendable characteristics of ECC.
