Abstract

To achieve building energy conservation goals, models for forecasting energy consumption with energy-related occupant behavior inclusive must be encompassed in energy performance efforts. Regardless of the efforts made in the residential building sector and building energy performance, the scientific community still lacks a reliable and simple instrument that can instantaneously address and solve the energy and environmental balance of buildings. This study attempts to give a chronological review of both AI-based and conventional models employed in energy consumption prediction, based on the model type, forecasting accuracy, and applied areas. And also to identify drivers of consumption and their implications in building energy performance as they have remained a challenging task, volatile and confusing. The applications, strengths, and disadvantages of such approaches are contrasted and linked, while suitable recommendations are made on future directions of the research. This review offers valuable suggestions for researchers in choosing an appropriate model for forecasting energy consumption.
