Abstract

ABSTRACTThe bitewing (BW) radiograph is a common dental diagnostic aid and is a frequent component of the dental record. Radiographs, in particular the BW, provide valuable comparative information and have traditionally been a significant element in forensic dental identification. Although there is great confidence in their use and the literature is replete with examples of the comparison of dental radiographs, there have been few studies to provide scientific support or statistical validation of their use. In the last few years, attention has been given to this subject and this paper reviews and summarizes these efforts. The cited literature indicates that BW radiographs have a high degree of accuracy for general use in dental identification. However, in some specific cases, such as the identification of children or when long time lapses occur between the antemortem (AM) and postmortem (PM) radiograph, the sensitivity and accuracy of the method falls off somewhat.
