Abstract

The paper outlines the progress made by the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) in the development of silencers for the control of boiler safety valve and relief valve noise. System noise sources and the formulation of environmental noise criteria are discussed; the silencer design philosophy adopted by the CEGB is described and the progressive improvements are charted to demonstrate the advances made over earlier practices. The results of this work are design concepts which provide silencers which are suitable for application to any of the CEGB's steam valve vent systems and are capable of meeting stringent neighbourhood noise criteria.
