Abstract

Obesity, defined as a condition with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 kg/m2, is a global epidemic. The rates of obesity have been rising in many countries, including the United States, Australia, China, and also in our country Indonesia. Bariatric surgery has seen a rise in rates worldwide in tandem with rising obesity rates in the world. Our literature review highlights the number of bariatric surgeries performed and the various procedures like gastric sleeve, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and gastric banding, available for patients. Furthermore, our review provides insights how combining bariatric surgery with body contouring procedures such as abdominoplasties, thighplasties, mastopexies, and brachyoplasties improves quality of life.
