Abstract
ABSTRACTAn overemphasis on taphonomy in the study of human remains has resulted in a failure to consider the effects of culture. Predetermined conclusions of cannibalism are the result. The problem is compounded by the lack of an established and standardized methodology for the recording and interpretation of trauma on human bone, as well as incomplete knowledge of the full range and extent of prehistoric mortuary practices within the American Southwest. The proposed solution includes considering human remains as a separate category of artifacts, and systematically applying taphonomic studies in combination with other analytical methods.
