Abstract

English discourse reading is essentially a complex cognitive process for Chinese English learners, which can serve as a vital approach to help learners to construct meaning and cultivate their critical thinking ability. Based on relevant research on the cultivation of critical thinking ability and the teaching principles of “TERRIFIC”,this study designs and applies a teaching action plan that integrates the cultivation of critical thinking ability into discourse reading, and discusses the effects of the teaching practice. The study might provide some insights for the development of college English learners’ critical thinking ability.
