Abstract
A new trilete spore is described from the early Cretaceous Wealden sediments of southern England. Ultrastructural investigation using scanning electron microscopy has revealed a complex sporoderm structure, totally unlike any previously described form. This fossil material provides some evidence of the mode of spore wall development. The functional significance and the stratigraphic potential of this new spore in the correlation of Wealden sediments is discussed.
