Abstract

In 1977, Osman Lins organized and published a short story collection named Missa do galo: variacoes sobre o mesmo tema , comprising different versions of Machado’s short story by contemporary authors such as Nelida Pinon who contributed with “O Ilustre Menezes”. The aim of this paper is to verify the process of the latter author’s rewriting of the short story, especially the dialogue between her text and Machado’s original discourse, and the possible consequences her female gaze has brought to the economy of the new story.
