Abstract
A method for the formation of the stiffness matrix of a rectangular plate finite element (with in-plane forces) with a nonpropagating, one-edge, open crack is presented. Linear normal and constant shear stress distributions were assumed within the element. The crack was modelled by an additional flexibility matrix, the terms of which were calculated using fracture mechanics. Numerical calculations were carried out and the results were compared with those of previous investigators and experimental data. The element may be easily applied to the statical and dynamical analysis of damaged structures. The method of stiffness matrix formation, described in this paper, may be used to determine the stiffness matrix for plate finite elements with other types of cracks (double-edge, elliptical, etc.) if their stress intensity factors are known.
