Abstract

This paper describes a small scale Reciprocating Canister Superconducting Magnetic Separator (RCSMS) that has been used to reduce the iron and potassium levels from a slurry of coarse English Kaolin. The magnet was a 5T solenoidal laboratory superconducting magnet, with a 0.127m warm bore, cooled by a BOC TurBOCool helium liquifier operating as a closed circuit refrigerator. The RCSMS was fully automated, controlled by a sequential solid state controller, and operated successfully for the duration of the experimental program.
