Abstract

Small-scale continuous-process apparatus was used under laboratory conditions for determining the principal parameters of the production process for magnesium hydroxide from strong magnesium chloride liquors with dolomite slurry as auxiliary: reaction time 3 h, optimum temperature 40°C, dolomite calcination temperature 1300°C. The principal properties of the magnesium hydroxide were as follows: magnesium hydroxide concentration in the suspension in 24 h 18–22%, MgO yield per unit area of the settling tank for the washed slurry 50 kg/(m2·h); the filtration rate (in terms of MgO) of the washed slurry for a liquid/solids ratio of 10 is about 600 kg/(m2·h), the magnesium hydroxide content of the cake 55–62%, and the magnesium content of the dead-burnt product about 97%.
