Abstract

Abstract The traditional method for determination of organic matter content via total carbon content or dry combustion is too time consuming for large sets of samples. A new rapid and reliable soil test has been developed based on the relationship between soil color in the extract and organic matter content in this method. Soil samples are extracted according to Westerhoff, a standard method for available copper and zinc, in 0.43M HNO3 and the absorption is measured at 540nm. A close relationship between soil color (expressed by the absorption) and the organic matter content was verified for different soil types in different regions of Northern Germany.
