Abstract

This paper concerns the quantitative determination of oil in water by turbidity measurement. The method is sensitive to 0.5 ppm (volume) or less and is rapid and reasonably accurate. The method is not intended to replace the various extractive methods for determining absolute values of oil content. It is most useful when many samples must be run to determine when corrective adjustments are required. The equipment is not delicate and is portable, which makes it ideal for field testing. Turbidity is affected by the kind of oil, contaminants, shear rate, shear time, and temperature. These parameters are discussed, and their effects are shown with experimental data.
