Abstract

A comprehensive Raman spestroscopic study of nickel(II) acetate tetrahydrate and its aqueous and methanolic solutions has been made. The v(Ni-O) stretching vibration of an aceto-nickel(II) complex has been identified. From comparisons with the Raman spectra of sodium acetate in the solid state and in aqueous and methanolic solutions, it is concluded that the acetato-nickel(II) complex is largely dissociated into acetate and hexa-aquo nickel(II) ions in aqueous solution under the experimental conditions. This evidence is discussed in the light of NMR and stability constant data for nickel(II) acetate.
