Abstract

“O Esplendor do Caos” (1998) is the book by Portuguese thinker Eduardo Lourenço (1923-2020) that I return to most often, and I suppose that no other work by the author of “O Labirinto da Saudade” (1978) will keep me busy as much over the next few years. As I hope to show in this article, this work is a remarkable reflection on the nature and functions of social and individual memory, and on the evil and its inscription in individuals and in society.
