Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoint practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies. Design/methodology/approach This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings What will ensure a startup becomes successful? For good reason, startups garner a lot of attention in the business press, although it often seems like it is for the wrong reasons. Startups make good copy as they are deemed as “sexy” – in other words, stories about them will be more likely to be read and shared than articles about more established firms. For the same reason, a story charting the rapid decline, huge losses, or ultimate failure of a startup will be even more interesting, with people attracted by the hubris dripping from such stories, of twentysomething entrepreneurs who dreamed big but flew too close to the sun. Originality/value The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.
