Abstract

The use of the momentum aberration inherent in magnetic quadrupole lenses is studied as the basis for constructing low resolution nuclear reaction product spectrometers and magnetic rigidity band pass filters. An operational system utilizing a quadrupole doublet is described. The system provides a solid angle of 1.8 mrs, a variable momentum acceptance range up to a mass energy product of 100 amu MeV, and a range of laboratory scattering angles from 0 to ± 80°. Data from representative experiments taken with the system are presented to demonstrate its capabilities.
