Abstract

The cause of the weight loss that occurs during continuous chlorination and Hercosett treatment of wool tops has been investigated. Wool top samples were collected and their amino acid composition determined. Samples from the treatment baths were collected after 20 h use and the amino acid contents and the protein fractions of the residues after evaporation were estimated. The results showed that proteins released in an industrial acid‐chlorination procedure originated from the exocuticle of the wool (including the a‐layer). The major part of the solubilised wool proteins was found in the sulphite bath. This can be explained by the fact that the degraded wool proteins are negatively charged and are released from the wool after raising the pH and the salt concentration of the treatment bath.
