Abstract

A recent geotechnical feasibility study confirmed that the Bukit Timah granite of Singapore is highly suited to the construction of rock caverns. For cost-estimating purposes, a cavern scheme has been considered comprising a warehouse and adjacent civil defense shelter. The scheme includes five warehouse caverns with a combined storage capacity of 200,000 m 3 and a defense shelter for 2,000 people. This paper describes the scheme and presents a cost estimate and indicative construction programme.
