Abstract
In February 1991, an EC study Panel on Large Magnetic Fields reported to the Advisory Committee on the steps that were needed to improve access for European scientists to existing high field facilities and to develop a European Large Magnetic Field Facility (ELMF) which would include a small number of 100 T semi-continuous magnets, a number of 60–100 T pulsed magnets and a 45 T hybrid magnet. A 100 T magnet was costed together with the cost of a 5-year feasibility project aimed at developing the technology and final design of the magnet. The response of the Advisory Committee was positive. They recommended that a Steering Committee should be set up to prepare and supervise the design of a new semi-continuous facility. An interim Steering Committee has now been formed and plans, with EC support, to organise a workshop in May 1992 to develop the scientific case for access to 100 T, and to consider the physical instrumentation needed. The workshop will also consider the technological applications including the developments in new materials for this project. The conclusions of the workshop and the Study Panel report could form the basis of an application for a feasibility study to the EC Framework programme. The steps outlined here were strongly endorsed by the 3rd International Symposium on High Magnetic Fields, Amsterdam, August 1991.
