Abstract

Programming education has become compulsory in elementary schools from 2020 and in junior high schools from 2021, as part of efforts to raise the level of ICT utilization in Japan. Programming is considered to improve the logical thinking ability of children. Although visual programming languages are being used in introductory programming education to convert ideas into reality for children who do not know how to code, it is necessary to learn text programming languages in order to realize more advanced and complicated processing. This paper describes an attempt for a text programming class using MATLAB for elementary school students. The results of the participant questionnaire describe that the participants have managed their tasks on their own even though they have felt those are difficult. In addition, the participants seem to have had successful experience by creating their own music files.
