Abstract

This paper describes a pilot project for shopfloor data collection currently underway at the Durham factory of Philips Components Ltd. (UK), where colour TV tubes are manufactured. The project is managed under a joint project with Durham University and aims to replace existing manual methods of quality control data with more efficient automated methods. The data will be collected with industrially robust intelligent terminals networked together via a low cost local area network. The system will analyse the data collected and provide continuous screen displays on production performance and an extensive on-line query facility for production supervisors. An analysis of the benefits of the system has shown that a saving of over £0.5m per annum should be made by its introduction.
