Abstract

Post-processing procedures are applied to estimate the error in energy, displacement and stress in finite element solutions for problems in linear elasticity. The error estimates are based on a complementary theory which can ensure that the estimate of the energy of the error is an upper bound. Local estimates of the error in displacement and stress follow either directly from the complementary analysis, or by extrapolating the solution to the energy bound.
