Abstract
Library and Archives Canada (LAC) was created in 2004 by bringing together the National Archives of Canada and the National Library of Canada. LAC collects and preserves Canada's documentary heritage with a goal to provide access to it now and in the future. The collection comprises millions of items, including books, newspapers, unique textual documents, microfilms, photographs, maps, audio-visual holdings, works of art, and electronic documents. With such a large and diverse collection, staff must take a risk management approach to facilitating current access while also ensuring preservation for long-term access to the collection. A decision tree was developed that illustrates the drivers of preservation activities in a sequential fashion, with LAC's responses to meet the needs of clients and the needs of the collection, in a holistic manner.
