Abstract
This study discusses the issue of the Indian influence in the toponymy in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, starting from an exam in the phytotoponymy - toponyms of vegetal origin - in the municipalities located in the south of the mentioned state, a region that still concentrates a vast contingent of Indian peoples. Such study is centred on the issue related to the etymology of designatives, highlighting the number of occurrences of Indian names in this category of toponyms and the importance of studying the place-names for retrieving regional particularities.
