Abstract

Statues in Handan are concentrated in Xiangtangshan Grottoes. Because the rulers of the Sui and Tang dynasties advocated Buddhism, folk statues also emerged. Through the study of statue records and types of Buddha statues, it can be found that statues have characteristics of personal orientation, family orientation, and sentient beings orientation. Buddhism has a dual function of psychological comfort and enhancing filial piety. By analyzing the characteristics of statues and the functions of Buddhism, it can be found that Buddhism plays a role in stabilizing society and changing people’s attitudes towards life and death.
