L. Abstract The extragalactic velocity field is mapped within about 30 Mpc from the Galaxy and 5 or 10 Mpc from the supergalactic plane. A highly selected sample is used, consisting of about 500 'best observed' galaxies of all types having distance moduli in the range of 26.3 to 32.3 (2 to 32 Mpc) derived from one to four distance indicators with standard errors of 0.3 to 0.6 mag. Maps of the velocity departures from the ideal uniform-isotropic Hubble expansion and of the apparent Hubble ratio are presented. A strong quadrupole anisotropy is clearly in evidence. None of the currently discussed models of the velocity field within the Local Supercluster and in its vicinity gives a quantitative representation of the observed field.
