Abstract
An experiment of conceptual self-surveillance in the form of a video essay, A Practice for Surrender looks at the topic of digital sleep data collection with a conspiratorial gaze. It seems that the once mystical and private refuge of sleep has become compromised by capitalist strategies of "quantific(a)tion". As self-trackers transform to workers in their sleep, the digital subject is redefined by contours of data drawn around a regular absence. While criticising the artificiality of measuring sleep, however, it could be asked in counterpoint: what marks the so-called real world beyond the confines of this stage set?
