Abstract

Abstract An assessment has been made of the inhomogeneities in niobium alloy superconductive wires which arise from segregation of alloying elements during ingot solidification. In 0·010 in. diameter wire of Nb-25% Zr, striated microstructures are obtained, the bands being about 2 μm wide and representing composition variations of about ±2% Zr. The corresponding data for Nb-48%Ti areabout 5μm and +8% Ti. A model relating flux jumps to periodically banded microstructures is developed.
