Abstract
Studies in the Armadale–Strathy area of north-east Sutherland indicate the presence of a large area dominantly composed of siliceous grey gneiss with subordinate amphibole-bearing gneisses, amphibolite and marble. The presence of relict pyroxene-granulite facies rocks unusually low in K, Rb and Th suggests that the Strathy complex may be Lewisian which has undergone prolonged high grade metamorphism, tentatively correlated with the Badcallian event. This characteristic depleted geochemistry also occurs in the grey gneisses, distinguishing them from other Lewisian supracrustal rocks.
