Abstract
This article addresses palm oil production in Brazil and its use for biofuels, such as biodiesel. The aim was to understand how this market evolved in the last 20 years - by analyzing the use and regulation of this biofuel -, and compare it with that of other world producing countries. Next, it was analyzed whether Brazilian palm oil production accompanies the growth in the world consumption of this biofuel, and whether it will be viable in a sustainable way in the next decade. The methods used are characterized by qualitative and quantitative research, and explanatory and descriptive data analysis. Since palm oil has been largely used as biofuel, the study points out Brazil’s advantages of having a stronger participation in the world's production. Because palm oil productivity supplants that of soybean in Brazil, the article can serve as a guide for the direction of public policies. Finally, it is concluded that Brazil has the right conditions to reach better global positions for this production.
