Abstract

What are some of the central principles that might guide policy-sensitive research and analysis of the media field, especially the audiovisual field, in Australia in the 19905? This article introduces six themes that, it is argued, will become increasingly important as we move into a more market-and competition-oriented audiovisual media environment, and considers the implications of these themes for the current stale of media and cultural studies. This is an amended version of a paper presented at the Film Policy Conference, Institute for cultural Policy Studies, Griffith University, 26-29 November 1991.
