Abstract
A polarized ion source has been constructed giving a current similar 0.1 μA. The background of unpolarized deuterons is 1-2 per cent and of protons, 10-15 per cent. The degree of alignment of the deuterons was determined from the anisotropy in the angular distribution of the α-particles from the reaction T(d, n)4He. The degree of alignment was found to be P2 = -0.326 ± 0.01, which is in good agreement with the theoretical value P2 = -0.328 for an orientating field of 10 Oe. From this it can be inferred that the polarization of the protons is similar 50 per cent and that of the deuterons, similar 33 per cent. Cooling the hydrogen dissociator with liquid nitrogen increased the intensity by roughly a factor of two.
