Abstract
A plastic columnar discotic phase is reported for several triphenylene derivatives. It is characterized by a three-dimensional positional order of the molecules, as in a crystalline state, while maintaining the rotational mobility of the molecules. Only very minute changes in structure and dynamics occur at the phase transition from the normal discotic hexagonal phase to the discotic plastic phase.
