Abstract

The Military Airlift Command (MAC) is responsible for planning the allocation of airlift resources for moving cargo and passengers during peacetime and in crisis situations. The airlift-planning heuristic is a candidate for incorporation in the Airlift Deployment Analysis System, an interactive data-base environment. It was developed for the US Air Force under a subcontract with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The heuristic is fast and flexible, incorporating all significant constraints for both deliberate (peacetime) and execution (crisis) planning. Because of its speed and detail, MAC will be able to evaluate many options quickly when performing deliberate planning. With its interactive data-base structure and ability to interrupt and restore a problem at any time in the analysis, MAC can be very responsive in execution planning.
