Abstract

Inductance is defined for magnetostatics as the ratio of magnetic flux to current. This work provides a pictorial view of the relationship between the magnetic flux and the inductance terms associated with two coaxial current loops in free space. In addition, this work presents the inductance matrix, inductance network, and mutual and leakage inductances of the two current loops. The exact and asymptotic/approximate mutual inductances of two circular current loops separated by various distances are plotted, giving insight into the applicability of the approximate formulas. A collective work not available elsewhere is conveyed for the inductance terms, the magnetostatic potential energy, and the force associated with two coaxial circular current loops in free space.
