Abstract

The direction of crack extension of 2-D angled edge-cracks in tensile sheets has been investigated using photoelastic models. For low values of the ratio of the stress intensity factors ( K II K I ) the axis of symmetry of the isochromatic fringe loops in the neighbourhood of the crack tip approximates to the direction of the maximum circumferential stress. Thus, a prediction of the direction of crack extension can be made along this line of symmetry. Experimental tests verified the accuracy of the photoelastic technique for values of K II K I < 0.7 .
